Mendeleev 2016

Organization

The KBE committee

The Kleine Buitenlandse Excursie (KBE) committee is a committee of the Fysisch-Mathematische Faculteitsvereniging (FMF) and is responsible for organizing a study trip to within Europe every two years, in this case Saint Petersburg. The KBE committee is monitored and evaluated by the Stichting GBE-FMF which is a foundation that consists of students of the FMF who have previously organized a study trip of the FMF. Besides that, on the study trip itself two staff members will join. Usually these staff members have connections with professors from the location and therefore will also help the KBE committee before the study trip. Furthermore, the KBE committee is supported by a Board of Recommendation. The members of the KBE committee Mendeleev '16 are shown in the picture left from top-left to bottom-right: Joop, Bastian, Yannick, Oscar and Joost.

Yannick Woudstra - Chairman

Булава!! (Good day) My name is Yannick Woudstra and I am the stranger in our midst. Not only because I am the chairman, in contrast to my fellow committee members I am studying a whole different spectrum of the Natural Sciences: Biology. I am currently in my fourth year, finishing the bachelor and still excited nonetheless. Another thing I am also very enthusiastic about is travelling. For me life is all about seeing as much of the world as possible, with all its natural and cultural diversity. Of course Russia cannot be skipped and I hope you will add Saint Petersburg to your list as well.

Joost Calon - Secretary/Vice-chairman

Woah, it’s so fantastic to be here that I cannot contain my joy, passion and love! I am Joost and I’m a fifth year Applied Physics student. Last year I participated in the GBE to Indonesia and Singapore and before that I was part of the Opcie ’15. I really love travelling and discover new places, which is why I joined the KBE. I believe Saint Petersburg is a whole new experience which I definitely look forward to. Some activities that I like to do in my home country are listening to music, playing piano and badminton. поцілунки!

Joop Adema - Treasurer

Hi all, I am Joop Adema and I am the treasurer of the KBE committee. I am a fourth year Applied Physics student and a third year Economics student. Besides, I am a mediocre but fanatic soccer player and I have a broad interest in all kinds of useless and less useless facts in politics, economics, music and history. Previously, I organised the Acceleracie '15, I was treasurer in the '14-'15 Huygens and a general member of the '14-'15 Da Vinci. На здоровье!!

Oscar Delicaat - Day scheduler

Done a fair bit of travelling but discovered soon enough that money doesn't grow on trees and working is not a whole lot of fun. Eventually decided that doing the KBE would be a nice way to get a sponsored trip to a destination of choice! All kidding aside it's a nice way to get to know about communication with businesses and universities abroad and it was interesting to find the coolest destination for the best price! с любовью

Bastian Yip - Day scheduler

Всем привет! This will be my first time abroad with the FMF and the first time going to Russia. Together with Oscar, I will be making the schedule of what we will be doing in the two weeks that we are in St. Petersburg. A part of it will be focussed on education and the other part will be focussed on leisure. I'm really excited to visit St. Petersburg and I recommend applying for this epic excursion, it's truly one of a kind!

Staff members

Prof. dr. M.A. Loi

Maria Loi started her academic journey in Cagliari, Sardinia and did a Ph. D, there as well. Since 2006, Maria works at the university of Groningen and became a full professor in 2014 in Photophysics and Opto-electronics. To date she (co-)published 107 research articles in international journals. In 2011 she won the Minerva Prize by ‘stichting FOM’, acknowledging both her research expertise and the role model that she has become for women in physics.

Dr. M. S. Pchenitchnikov

Maxim Pchenitchnikov is a member of the Optical condensed matter group, part of the Zernike institute of Advanced Materials. He teaches to postgraduate students from Applied Physics and conducts research in the field of Ultrafast Spectroscopy. He examines the physics of chemical phenomena like hydrogen bonds and micelle formation.

Board of Recommendation

Prof. dr. J. Knoester

Prof. dr. J. Knoester is the dean of the faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Groningen. He is originally a theoretical physicist specialized in condensed matter. Next to his profession as dean he is also a board member in multiple organizations such as the NNV (Dutch association for physics), FOM (Dutch research centre for fundamental research of matter) and NOVA (Dutch research institute for Astronomy). Besides, he is a guest lecturer in Jilin, China.

Prof. dr. E.A. Bergshoeff

Prof. dr. E.A. Bergshoeff is director of the Van Swinderen Institute (VSI), a department at the university of Groningen directed towards theoretical physics. He is specialized in high energy physics and elementary particle physics. He is famous for his work in quantum gravity which tries to unify the theory of gravity and quantum mechanics in the so-called string theory. The professor's current work mainly includes the new geometry that underlies the String Theory.

Prof. dr. A.M. van den Berg

Prof. dr. A.M. van den Berg is the director of the KVI-Center for Advanced Radiation Technology (KVI-CART), an experimental research facility of the University of Groningen. Next to that, he is also director of the International Cosmic Ray Conference 2015. He is a professor specialized in astrophysics, mainly researching detection of high energy cosmic rays at the Pierre Auger Observatory in Argentina. Prof. dr. A.M. van den Berg supports our excursion and mentions the experience of our association in organizing foreign study excursions, referring to many successful trips in the past.
